Information | The construction of the church as a convent for friars began in 1484... |
It was first built as a convent for Carmelite friars in 1484, then the Church was consecrated with the title of Santa Maria del Carmine in 1507. After the convent had been suppressed (we still conserve the cells and the rectory of the old convent), it became a parish church in 1653. Inside the church you can see the wooden choir, the marble balustrade (which dates back to 1777), some wooden statues of the Beata Vergine dell’Assalto and of Saint Francis (which date back to the XVI and the XVIII centuries) and many headstones.
The remarkable architectural and pictorial structures were object of some important interventions on the designs of Mella, who also worked on the Cathedral of Casale Monferrato, in 1860. The extraordinary paintings, attributed to Guala, Lanino and Grammorseo, are currently off-site because of restauration works.
The internal façade was rebuilt in 1907 (projects of Alzona e Mella). You will also appreciate the polychrome glass windows.
