Information | The oldest church in Rosignano Monferrato, it was built in the XII century... |
It is the oldest church in Rosignano. It was built in Romanesque style in the XII Century and consecrated to San Giovanni. On the left side there is still a single lancet window with a doorjamb and a false archivolt in tuff.
The church was mentioned in some medieval parchments as a meeting place, but it became a parish church from 1555 to 1653 following the war destruction of the old medieval “Pieve di San Vittore all’Are”. From the XIII Century it became a cemetery and the headquarter of the “Confraternita of the Disciplinanti of Sant’Antonio Abate”.
Over the choir, there is a little bell tower (which was probably a medieval watchtower). Its bell was refund in 1618. The church is characterized by a double façade: the external one is poorer and it dates back to the early XVII century, while the internal one reflects the Romanesque-Gothic style and it has three well preserved doors.
The precious internal fresco (XII and XVI centuries) came to light in the late 1900. The tiled floor has some old trapdoors which lead to the underlying sepulchers. The church is currently undergoing some restauration works.
